The film was an immediate commercial success upon release on November 19, 2006 grossing over $294 million domestically during its theatrical run. The film won multiple awards including Academy Award for Best Picture among others. Today it is perhaps best remembered as the first major motion picture to be released in 3D although it was not filmed in 3D. It is also remembered for being the first movie to have an S&P 500 stock index ticker shown during the film. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, but received criticism for its portrayal of events. The accuracy of the film's portrayal of events was disputed by some parties involved in Chris Gardner's life, particularly his ex-wife. The details for this article were taken from the article on the , which draws on information from "Chris Gardner: Don't Give up on Your Dreams" by Chris Gardner with Jeremy Colson (Gotham Books, 2007). The film adaptation begins after Chris had successfully passed his licensing exam and is working at Dean Witter. He is then approached by Carolyn, the wife of his ex-boyfriend, who asks Chris to become unemployed and move in with her. Although at first he declines, he agrees to consider the offer. Chris's boss is interested in him becoming a stockbroker. He first tries to do it on his own but fails, so he goes to his recruiter, whom he had met during an interview. The recruiter soon convinces Chris that it’s too difficult on the job market for an unlicensed broker and offers him a job as an office assistant instead. Chris refuses the offer at first until he is told that they don't give people $22 hourly pay during their probation period. He then agrees and is told to report to work the next day. On his first day, he is placed inside a cubicle with a resistant telephone-salesman, Brian. After a few days, Chris learns that he has been fired after telling his boss at Dean Witter that he was going to take a break from work for an "important appointment". Chris storms into the Dean Witter office and demands why he was fired from his job despite performing well. He is told that it's because "You told your boss you were taking time off for an important appointment". Chris then tries to convince his old boss at Dean Witter to re-hire him, but is unsuccessful. As a result, he is forced to face the reality of having a low-wage job. In order to support his son, Chris quits his job as an office assistant and moves into a motel. He then finds a job as a sales representative at a medical equipment company called Metron Inc., where he ends up dealing with the firm's owner, Ron LaFon. Although Chris's first day at Metron went well, it all went downhill from there. His co-workers gave him bad leads and were even harassing him because they didn't want him around. The only happy news was that Chris met Linda, an executive secretary who would later become his first wife and have his second son with him. cfa1e77820
